Local couple married 6 decades shares secrets of lasting love

By ANNA MEILER

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) -- After 63 years of marriage, John and Barb Shaul are spending Valentine's Day looking over photographs of their life. They still remember when they met at the tennis courts in Cobleskill.

"I thought wow there's a guy that can play tennis. I better get a game with him," said Barb Shaul.

But, it wasn't "love all."

"I was dating a few other guys at the same time. You have to choose between them," said Barb.

Barb chose John because of his honesty. John was drawn to Barb for her talents and all the things they shared in common.

"I just knew that I wanted to be part of Barb's life and be a partner if you will and the more we knew each other and the more experiences we had to share I was more and more and more sure," said John Shaul.

Six decades of marriage has brought travels, four kids and a lot of ups and downs, but they've made it through them all. Their most recent bump is Barb's diagnosis of Parkinson's, forcing them to live in separate wings of Masonic Care in Utica. They hope one day they'll live together again.

"That's another thing that we've agreed on. You just don't give up. You keep on aiming and hoping that things will work out the way you want," said John.

"Put one foot in front of the other and do the best you can," said Barb.

While marriage really is a labor of love, they also just feel lucky.

"I don't have one regret, not a bit not a bit," said John.
