Millers Mills Ice Cream Social a big hit on a hot day

By By GARY LIBERATORE

MILLERS MILLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's a tradition like no other here in our area, the Millers Mills Ice Cream Social.  Karen Schorer has lived in Millers Mills all her life never misses the annual event, "oh, i love it.  My father grew up here, so I live in the house he was born and grew up in, so it's great.."

Carol Collins has been the chairperson here for the past 45 years, she says there is four days of preparation to make the 350 quarts of ice cream served on this Sunday, "Thursday morning the ladies of the grange make the custard which is milk, sugar, we make chocolate and we make vanilla.  The custard is in a great big container and then that's all sealed and you put it in a great big tub with ice, salt and water, and that freezes your custard."  The ice used to keep the ice cream frozen is the ice produced during the annual Ice Harvest this past winter.

This is the end of an era this year though, Carol Collins is stepping down as chairperson, "I'm passing the tradition to my niece Coleen Dye, for next year.  This is the handing of the baton."
