Montgomery County Jail inmate dies after jumping from transport van

FULTONVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - The Montgomery County sheriff says an inmate died when he jumped from a corrections vehicle as it turned
into the entrance to the county jail.

Sheriff Michael Amato says 30-year-old Louis Torres Jr. of Amsterdam hit his head Wednesday afternoon when he jumped from the
prison van. Torres was on his way back to jail after a court appearance for parole violations related to a domestic incident.

Amato said Torres and other inmates were joking around about escaping from custody shortly before the incident. He said Torres
waited until the vehicle slowed down before he made his attempt.
