NY restricts hunters because of Pennsylvania deer disease
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York conservation officials have formalized a ban on bringing certain parts of dead white-tailed deer and elk into the state because of chronic wasting disease discovered in Pennsylvania.
They say hunters should butcher the animals before bringing them into New York and leave behind the brain, eyes, spinal cord, tonsils, intestinal tract, spleen and certain lymph nodes.
The rule covering any state where the disease is found was put in place in October on an emergency basis.
The neurological disease affecting deer, elk and moose was first confirmed in New York in 2005, but no new cases have been discovered since then.
