Next step for land claim settlement

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente briefed the full county legislature Thursday night on the details of the proposed land claim settlement between Madison and Oneida counties, New York State, and the Oneida Nation.

County lawmakers in both counties are just a few of the bodies of law that need to pass the settlement agreement in order for it to move forward.

While all those principles involved are in agreement, including the state legislature, the Department of Interior, and the state attorney general, they all have to sign off on it before it's official.

Picente said he's pretty confident there will be enough support to pass the agreement.

"both counties are on board, the leadership of both counties, which were at the table when we constructed these agreements together going forward with the Oneidas, so I think it really has the pieces that might have been lacking before, that can move it forward."

Picente said the governor only contacted him April 30th about drafting the historic land claim settlement.

The time frame for all those parties to weigh in the agreement, and to have it passed is January 1st, 2014.
