Oneida County swears in new American citizens

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Twenty three residents of Oneida County are now American citizens.

A naturalization ceremony was held Friday morning at the Oneida County Office Building where the guest speaker was acting Supreme Court Justice Joan Shkane.

As always, Oneida County Clerk Sandra DePerno was the person who performed the actual naturalization ceremony.

"It's always the best part of my job, I think, to see all of our new citizens," DePerno said. "They're all very happy, excited and I think our ceremonies are a lot more nicer than the federal. We try to make them ceremonial. We have the color guard from the Post in North Utica."

Among the countries the new citizens hail - Canada, Somalia, Burma and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
