Police: Woman high when taking daughter to doctor's office

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Police have arrested a Utica woman under Leandra's Law after they say she showed up high at a local medical center. According to New Hartford Police, Natasha K. Ward, 37, of Utica arrived at Slocum-Dickson Medical Center on Thursday, January 10 with her 13 year old daughter and appeared high. When police arrived on the scene to investigate, they say Ward admitted to using illegal drugs prior to driving her daughter to Slocum-Dickson. Ward has been charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law, for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle. Ward was additionally charged with other Vehicle and Traffic Law violations in regards to her drivers license being suspended. Ward was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree criminal contempt. The Criminal Contempt charge is a result of Ward violating an active order of protection which states she is not to be under the influence of any illegal drug while in the presence of her daughter. Ward was arraigned at Town of New Hartford Court on remanded to Oneida County Jail on $5,000 cash bail and is scheduled to return on a later date.
