Search continues for missing Sauquoit man

TOWN OF FORESTPORT, N.Y. (WKTV)-New York State Police in Remsen urge the public to help with a missing person investigation in Herkimer County.

Authorities say 84-year-old Donald Combs, of Sauquoit has been missing since Thursday. Combs went hiking near the Black River Wild Forest Trailhead off Bear Creek Road, in the Town of Forestport.

Police say Combs left a note with his family explaining he would be home on Saturday, and when he hadn't returned by Saturday evening, the family headed north to search for him Sunday morning.

They found his car parked in the parking lot at the entrance of the Black River Wild Forest and then found a T-shirt tied to a tree about 100 yards from Gull Lake, the area Combs is known to have camped in for the past six decades.

State Police Capt. Francis Coots says the belief is that Combs tied the shirt to the tree so he would know he was close to the lake upon returning to the area while off for a hike.  Coots says the search will continue Monday evening until dark and resume Tuesday morning and continue indefinitely, at least for now.

Anyone who has seen Donald Combs, or knows of his whereabouts, is asked to contact State Police in Oneida by calling 315-366-6000.
