Some local bars open all night on New Year's Eve

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) -- A handful of local bars are going to keep the party going long after the ball drops. Across New York State, a total of 250 bars received special permits to stay open late on New Year's Eve.

Belly Up Pub in Herkimer is one of those bars. The owner said she applied for the permit through the State Liquor Authority to stay open past their usual closing time of 2 a.m. They're bringing on extra staff, security and entertainment for the big night.

For everyone looking to make New Year's Eve last longer, you can stay there and several other local bars until at least 4 a.m.

The late-night list includes DejaVu Bar and Lounge in downtown Utica, Club Aqua in Bridgewater and the TS Steakhouse at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona. Two bars in Rome with extended hours are Bucky's Restaurant and Lounge and Rhine Haus. In Oneonta, the Legends Filling Station and the Red Jug Pub will be open extra late.

Those late night spots are creating an extra challenge for local law enforcement, but they say they'll be out in full force tomorrow to enforce safe driving.

The number of deaths due to drinking and driving has significantly dropped over the years, from 26 fatalities in 1982 to only one in 2012.

Sheriff Rob Maciol of the Oneida County Sheriff's Department says one death is too many, and he wants to remind people of the consequences that come from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

"Fine can be anywhere from 500 to a thousand dollars, up to one year in jail and a suspension of up to one year with an ignition interlock on your car which would for a set time, a time set forth by the court, you'd actually have to blow into a machine before you'd be able to operate your car to insure that you're not drinking," said Maciol.

They say the best thing you can do is to make a plan for a safe ride before you go out. One law firm Martin, Harding and Mazzotti is providing free rides Tuesday night from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. Just call 1-800-law-1010.
