Students get a chance to experience modern dance

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - About 600 local middle and elementary school students got to sit in on a free modern dance performance Friday morning at Hamilton College.

Students from Watson Williams and Lourdes schools in Utica attended and had a chance to see a sneak peek of the performance by Doug Varone and dancers. It was made possible by the Mohawk Valley Dance Partnership.

Hamilton College and Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute team up to bring a dance company here yearly. The students also get a chance to see performing arts firsthand.

"I think it's two-fold," said Performing Arts Director Michelle Reiser. "They learn the value of coming to see a live dance performance. I'm sure they 'Dancing with the Stars' on television, but here they actually get to see real people on stage right in front of them. And they also get to come up to see higher education at Hamilton College and see the beauty at the college."

Friday's performance was in the Schamback Center for Performing Arts at the school. The public performance is at 7 p.m. Saturday.
