Suspects acused of abducting Amish girls may have planned to do more

WKTV - The northern New York couple arrested in the kidnapping of two young Amish sisters may have planned to abduct more children according to authorities.

Stephen Howells, 39 and Nicole Vaisey, 25 of Hermon were each charged Friday with two counts each of first-degree kidnapping with the intent to physically harm the girls.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells said in a Saturday morning press conference that "there was the definite potential" of additional victims besides the two Amish sisters.

They vanished Wednesday evening in Oswegatchie, touching off a massive search in the farming community near the Canadian border.

They turned up safe Thursday night at the door of a house 15 miles from their home.

Sheriff Wells said the motive behind the kidnappings was to "take these girls from their home and victimize" them. He added that Howells and Vaisey may face more charges.

The couple is being held without bond and is due back in court on Thursday.
