Testing of former tannery site in Norway could begin by next week
NORWAY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The testing of an old toxic waste dump site in Herkimer County will begin later this week, or early next week.
A New York State DEC spokesperson says the specific date will depend on the weather conditions.
The site, located off of Military Road in the Town of Norway, was the area where a company called 'The Middleville Tannery' dumped its waste up until the 1960's.
Testing done previously in 1989 and again in 2005 showed high levels of chromium remain on the site, but it was deemed that no cleanup was required.
A woman who lives two miles from that site came down with breast cancer in 2003 and has since been doing a lot of her own investigating into the matter after learning so many people in the area have cancer.
Kim Labombard of Norway says she is happy the testing is being done and hopes that testing will lead to getting the site cleaned up.
