Thousands of dollars raised for flood victims at benefit

By WKTV News

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) - More than 300 people attended a benefit that raised money for flood victims living in Oneida Sunday afternoon. The benefit was held at Nothin Fancy in Vernon from Noon until 8pm.

Several local bands donated their time and performed for the crowd. Organizers hoped for an even bigger turnout but the rain put a damper on the outdoor activities they had planned.

Debbie Jennings and Sherry Snyder came up with the idea to hold a benefit for the people in their hometown.

"We both grew up in Oneida," said Jennings. "I live right up the street from the floods. Most of them are my neighbors, friends and family and we just felt like we needed to do something."

Through donation, raffles and 50/50's more than $4000 had already come in around 7pm. Nearly 150 residents who registered will benefit from the money.

People can still donate. Check can be mailed to the Oneida Savings Bank. Checks should be made out to "Local Area Flood Victims." The address is 116 West Walnut Street, Oneida, NY, 13421.
