Trial of woman accused of stabbing estranged husband set to begin

By JOLEEN FERRIS

(WKTV) - Opening arguments begin today in the attempted murder trial of a Frankfort woman accused of stabbing her husband. Jenise Haddad Smith also faces an assault charge in connection with the stabbing last March of Todd Smith.

It was a perplexing case from the start. Police arrived at the home of Todd Smith's parents to find both him and his estranged wife stabbed. Both were hospitalized and it was weeks before police had sufficient evidence to charge Jenise Haddad Smith with assault and attempted murder.

The couple are no strangers to police. A check of 9-1-1 records revealed multiple calls to the couple's Frankfort home in the past. Police also say that Todd Smith filed a complaint against his estranged wife about a week before police say she stabbed him.

After opening arguments, half a dozen witnesses are ready to take the stand on Tuesday.
