Utica native Annette Funicello dies at age 70
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Utica native and entertainment icon Annette Funicello has died at the age of 70. In 1992, Funicello announced she was suffering from multiple sclerosis. Funicello was just 13 years old when she gained fame as a Mouseketeer on Walt Disney's television show The Mickey Mouse Club. Cast after Disney saw her at a dance recital, she soon began receiving 8,000 fan letters a month, 10 times more than any of the 23 other young performers, according to the Associated Press. She was born in Utica in 1942, moving to California with her family when she was four years old. Funicello still have relatives in Central New York. She paid a visit to WKTV around 1960 to talk about her career.
