Verona residents clean up after Tuesday storm

By WKTV News

(Verona NY) - Some residents in Verona will be cleaning up for a while after strong storms cut through the area on Tuesday night.

At the intersection of Route 365 and Route 31, heavy winds brought down the traffic signals, snapped trees and ripped the signs off the Sav-On gas station roof. Just around the corner on West Main Street, many residents had trees come down on cars and homes.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton now says an F-1 tornado touched down at the intersection around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Winds topped out at 100 miles per hour.

Janice and Zeke Lafrois were shocked at the damage in their back yard.

"We heard the rumbling and the rain and I got up and saw the patio furniture blown around like it was the Wizard of Oz." Janice Lafrois said. " He (Zeke) looked out and all of a sudden that tree was sitting on our deck."

Around the corner from the Lafrois' on Station Street, Charles French says he heard what sounded like a train coming. "

When it hits the house, it's like an explosion, it's frightening, then the tree hit and then done. I could hear the wind and rain after that."

Crews are continuing to help with cleanup efforts and National Grid is trying to restore power.
