Whitestown Plaza back open after evacuation

WHITESTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - An accident forced the evacuation and the closure of the Whitestown Plaza Sunday afternoon. Officials say an elderly driver slammed into a natural gas entrance on the Kinney Drug store shortly after noon.

Officials say the driver, Verginia Peter, who was born in 1931, may have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake when her vehicle jumped the curb and hit the buiding.

The crash caused a bad gas leak. All of the nearby businesses were evacuated. The Whiteboro Fire Department and National Grid crews responded to the scene.

National Grid crews inspected the damage to the gas line and after about an hour determined it was safe.

The Whitestown Plaza opened back up around 1pm.

Peter was not injured but her vehicle and the building sustained damage.
