Work of local artist with international fame on display at Munson Williams

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - David Esterly may be an artist from Barneveld, but you'll find his work in the homes of some of the most esteemed collectors from New York City to Europe.

Starting Tuesday at Munson Williams in Utica, you will have the rare opportunity to see Esterly's Limewood Carvings, an art form that was popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. The carvings have razor-sharp details that appear as though they would be soft to the touch.

The exhibit offers the artist a chance to reunite with pieces he thought he would never see again.

"It's wonderful to see all these pieces together for me," Esterly said. "I'm like a kid around a Christmas tree because I don't own any of my own work, not a piece. So most of the carvings when they go out the door, I just don't see them again."

All of the pieces are actually borrowed from the owners.

"The Art of Subtraction" exhibit will be featured until March 10 at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute.
