Work started on former HSBC building in downtown Utica

(WKTV) - A downtown building that has been vacant for years is getting a new lease on life.

Development is now underway at the former HSBC building on Genesee Street. About 50 Dumpsters are already full of rubbish, ceiling tiles and other materials removed from the building.

The building is now being called the Landmarc, with the "c" at the end standing for commitment to the city. It will soon house apartments, retail space and a rooftop bar overlooking the city.

"It's a great project for us," said Francis Pezzolanella of Pezzolanella Construction. "It's a great project for the city. It's a building that was going to get knocked down and turned into just land."

Pezzolanella said the company is working to bring the building back and reclaim it. The project is expected to be finished in 2016.
