'Your fight is our fight,' the community rallies behind local man fighting cancer

By ALLISON NORLIAN

SCHUYLER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Anthony Pagliaro is experiencing the fight of his life.

The Schuyler resident is fighting stage three colon and rectal cancer. He was diagnosed in February.

Because of his diagnosis, and the immediate treatments needed, Pagliaro was forced to leave his jobs at Kunkel Ambulance and the Schuyler Fire Department, something that left the father of three, devastated.

Currently undergoing chemo-therapy treatments, Pagliaro says he has never been alone throughout the entire journey so far, " The support I have here has been amazing," he said.

Pagliaro's family, friends, co-workers and the community have created a team they call, 'Your fight is our fight,' expressing their willingness to stand by Pagliaro as he endures treatments for the cancer.

Wristbands and a bottle drive have been a way the community has raised money for the Palagrio family. Besides that, some of Palagrio's former co-workers have shaved their heads for the cause.

Paul Scheidelman, a paramedic at Kunkel Ambulance and co-worker of Palagrio's said, "I was driving to work and I heard other people getting their hair cut for money so I walked into work one morning and I said if you guys can come up with $100, I'll let you shave my head. And they did it quite quickly."

That $100 raised to shave Scheidelman's head turned into thousands of dollars raised and multiple Kunkel Ambulance employees with buzz cuts.

All the money raised  is going to the Pagliaro family to help offset costs while he is out of work.

The Schuyler Fire Department is hosting a large "Your Fight is our Fight," cancer benefit on May 24 for Anthony Pagliaro. It will be from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the VFW Post. Tickets are $20 for adults. Children 10 and under are free.

The benefit will include a DJ, live bands, dunk booth, Chinese and live auctions as well as a bounce house.
