HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Herkimer County officials are declaring this Monday, March 25 a day of mourning.

Officials want to give the entire community a chance to pause and grieve together, remembering those killed and those still struggling to recover. A little further down the road, in about a month for so, they're planning a more formal remembrance ceremony.

"It's part of the healing process to pay tribute to members of the community who are no longer members of the community," said Herkimer County Legislative Chairman Vincent Bono. "We want to remember their name and make sure they're not forgotten and I think this is one way of doing it, just holding a county wide ceremony."

Bono says the planned ceremony is also intended to show appreciation to the agencies and first responders who assisted during the tragedy.
