Brockport campus holds candlelight vigil for slain student

BROCKPORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - The SUNY Brockport community gathered on campus Saturday night to mourn the loss of one of their students.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has not yet confirmed the identity of the student whose body was found, but several sources in Central New York say she is a New Hartford High School graduate.

Cpl. John Helfer, of the sheriff's office tells NEWSChannel 2 they expect to release her name sometime Sunday afternoon.

The girl's boyfriend, 21-year-old Clayton Whittemore, is charged with her murder. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Saturday.

Whittemore is also from New Hartford, graduating in 2010 and currently enrolled at Utica College. He is known in the area as a star hockey player, contributing to two state championships and being named player of the year in 2010.

This is the first time a murder has happened on the SUNY Brockport campus, according to college officials.

John Fallaco, the public relations manager at the college told NEWSChannel 2, "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family and friends of our student on this sad day."

Fallaco also said that Counseling Center staff and other campus professionals have been meeting with students throughout the day and will continue to provide them with all the necessary support.
