Afghan president defiant after Kabul hotel assault

By WKTV News

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai has vowed his government will assume responsibility for the country's security as planned despite an assault on a Kabul hotel that left 19 people dead, including eight attackers.

The strike against the Inter-Continental hotel is one of the biggest and most complex to have occurred within Kabul and appears designed to show that insurgents are able to strike even in the center of power.

It comes about a week after President Barack Obama announced the beginning of an American withdrawal and the transfer of security responsibility in several areas.

Karzai says in the statement that the insurgents are "enjoying the killing of innocent people" and "such incidents will not stop us from transitioning security of our country."
