Beauty queen killed in protests mourned in Venezuela

VALENCIA, Venezuela (AP) - People in the Venezuelan city of Valencia are mourning a student beauty queen slain during one of the political protests that have engulfed the country.

Friends and family say 22-year-old Genesis Carmona was shot by backers of President Nicolas Maduro while taking part in a peaceful protest along with her mother on Tuesday.

She is one of six people known to have died in the clashes since Feb. 12. She was buried Friday after a private Mass.

Government opponents say her death was an example of the indiscriminate violence employed to stifle protests.
