Investigator: Officials knew of Kosovo organ trade

By WKTV News

PARIS (AP) - A European investigator into alleged trafficking of
human kidneys in the Balkans says police and intelligence officers
in the area knew of the grisly trade but did not speak for
political reasons.

Council of Europe investigator Dick Marty, a Swiss senator,
spoke to reporters Thursday about his 55-page report that said the
Kosovo Liberation Army was involved in crimes in the immediate
aftermath of Kosovo's independence from Serbia in 1999.

He says "inhuman" treatment of people and illicit trafficking
of human organs in Kosovo remains unpunished today.

He says "it was known by numerous people who, in private, would
say 'Yes we know, but for political reasons we made the choice or
we have the duty to remain silent."'
