Some tick treatments may not be as effective

By NEWSChannel 2 Staff

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Lyme Disease is a major health concern as tick season approaches and a local veterinarian says he hears more and more treatments are not effective and that some ticks are becoming resistant.

Dr. Frank Mondi of the New Hartford Animal Hospital says that warming trends and an increased deer population are making the little bugs more prevalent. However, that's not the only reason that dogs may be itching. Dr. Mondi says some new reports are saying "frontline" may not be working as well as previously thought, depending on where you are purchasing it.

"What I'm starting to hear is that the products we have used may not be as effective as they once were," Dr. Mondi said. "Whether that means there are some resistant ticks out there. We're not applying properly or they're getting it from sources that are not legit. The product might look the same, but it's not as effective."

Dr. Mondi says many products we buy online or in stores are not what they say they are and the active ingredient may not be as strong.
