UC Men's Hockey Pounds Lebanon Valley 10-0

UTICA, NY – Freshman forward Soichiro Omi (Bradford (GMHL)/Tokyo, Japan) netted his first four collegiate goals on Saturday night as the Utica College men’s hockey team defeated visiting Lebanon Valley 10-0 in ECAC Men’s West Conference action in front of 2,831 fans at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

With the win the Pioneers completed the season sweep of Lebanon Valley and improved to 5-2-1 on the year. The Pioneers have now defeated the Dutchmen in 16 consecutive meetings. LVC remains winless on the season as they drop to 0-10 overall.

15 of the Pioneers 18 skaters scored at least one point in the conference victory and Utica went 5-for-10 on power play opportunities. 10 Pioneers tallied double-digit scoring efforts including Soichiro Omi (four goals), Aaron Jeffery (Billings Bulls (NAHL)/Brighton, MI) (two assists, one goal), Kregg Guestin (Swan Valley (MJHL)/Kingsburg, CA)(one goal, one assist), TJ Schneider (La Ronge Ice Wolves/Spring City, PA) (one goal, one assist), Russell Anderson (Alpena (NAHL)/Riverside, CA) (one goal, one assist), Tim Coffman (Laconia (AJHL)/Elverson, PA) (two assists), Mike Lane (Green Mountain Glades (EJHL)/Westchester, PA) (two assists), Jeff Pappalardi (Capital District Selects (EJHL)/Delmar, NY)(two assists), Dave Burkholder (Merrimack College/Buffalo, NY)(two assists) and Mike Leone (St. Louis (NAHL)/Dearborn, MI) (one goal, one assist).

Sophomore goalie Justin Bolla (Oswego (OPJHL)/Niantic, CT) stopped all 14 shots he faced and earned his first collegiate shut out while Rich Drazin, Aaron Miller and Kelly Curl combined for 29 saves in net for the Dutchmen. Utica outshot Lebanon Valley 49-14 on the night.

UC jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead behind two goals from Omi at 3:03 and 19:53. Both goals were scored on power play opportunities. Coffman and Pappalardi each earned an assist on the game’s opening goal while Burkholder and Pappalardi assisted on the Omi’s second collegiate goal.

The second period was all Utica as the Pioneers outscored the visiting Dutchmen 6-0 in 20 minutes of play. Junior Aaron Jeffery opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season just nine seconds into the period followed by Mike Leone who netted his fifth tally of the season 1:36 later to give UC a commanding 4-0 lead. Senior assistant captain TJ Schneider added the fifth goal of the game on an assist from freshman classmates Jake Coyle (Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL)/Brooklyn, OH) and Max White (NY Bobcats (AJHL)/Sands Point, NY) at the 3:22 mark of the period. Omi scored his third goal of the night 1:33 later and then scored his final goal of the evening on a power-play at the 9:44 mark. Sophomore defender Kregg Guestin netted his first collegiate goal with 7:40 left in the second period to raise UC’s lead to 8-0. Jeffery and freshman Russell Anderson assisted on Guestin’s power-play goal.

Anderson opened the third period scoring with the first goal of his career at 4:37 before freshman Colin McIntosh (Dryden (SIJHL)/Winnipeg, MB) closed out the scoring on the evening with his second goal of the season with less than 12 minutes to go in the game.

New Hartford High School, Rome Free Academy, Whitesboro High School and Clinton High School will be squaring off in the holiday tournament.

Lebanon Valley travels to Neumann College on Dec. 6th to take on the Knights in a conference match up at 7 p.m.
