Utica Women's Hockey Gets Back On Track vs. Buffalo State

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Utica College women’s hockey team netted three third period goals on its way to a 5-0 win over visiting Buffalo State in ECAC Women’s West Conference play Friday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Junior forward Andrea Maxon netted two goals and sophomore goalie Kelley Peers stopped 15 shots in her second collegiate shut out.

With the win the Pioneers snapped a four game skid and improved to 8-6-2 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play. The Bengals have lost three out of their last four games and dropped to 2-9-4 on the year.

UC’s Darcy Hier opened the scoring on the evening when she netted her first goal of the season off an assist from team-leading scorer Lynny Gonzales at the 13:29 mark of the first period. Gonzales, who totaled two points on the evening, now leads the team with 17 points on five goals and 12 assists this season.

UC took a 2-0 lead in the second period when sophomore Becky Heim skated in on the left side and beat Buffalo State goalie Kelly Mendola through the five hole. Darcy Hier and Ann Rancourt assisted on Heim’s second goal of the season 8:20 into the second period.

UC netted three goals in the third period to seal the victory. Andrea Maxon tallied the first and last goals of the third period, her fifth and sixth of the season, at 7:03 and 11:00. Senior assistant captain Samantha Rowan and Becky Heim assisted on Maxon’s first goal while freshman defender Mackenzie Roy and senior forward Michelle Witz assisted on the second. Tiffany Bichrest also tallied a third period goal at the 8:18 mark. Gonzales tallied her second assist of the night while senior captain Jessica Leclerc also added a helper.

Kelly Mendola stopped 25 shots in net for the Bengals before AJ Sliwinski made five saves in the final 11:42 of action for Buffalo.

The Pioneers went 2-of-5 on the power play and prevented the Bengals from scoring on all seven of their power play chances. UC also out shot Buffalo 35-15 on the evening.

Utica looks to complete the season series sweep of the Bengals when they return to the ice Saturday for the second game of a seven game home stand. The puck is scheduled to drop at 3 p.m. Live audio, video and stat will be available at www.ucpioneers.com.
