Dolgeville bears down, beats Herkimer in final minute

By By BRIAN SANDLER

DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - After nearly fumbling away its season-opener with three second-half fumbles, Dolgeville's football team rallied for a go-ahead touchdown with 32 seconds left to beat Herkimer Saturday in a crossover matchup of perennial Class D and Class C contenders.

Tied at 21, Dolgeville got the ball with 1:39 left on its own 32-yard line after Herkimer just missed a potential touchdown when a Mike Fahy 4th-down pass went off sophomore Sean Crandall's fingertips near the goal line.  A late hit penalty and a big run each by quarterback Zach Goyette and running back Alex Snyder got Dolgeville down to Herkimer's 13-yard line, and Goyette rolled out and hit Chris Robotham in the end zone to put the Blue Devils ahead.

Herkimer's last chance was snuffed out quickly as a trick play on 1st down ended with Goyette intercepting Crandall.

Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Herkimer surged back in the second half behind its defense.  After forcing Dolgeville to punt on its first possession of the third quarter, Herkimer got a fumble out of Michael Barnes and Spencer Heath recovered it at the Dolgeville 9-yard line.  On the next play, Crandall ran into the end zone and the Magicians were within 21-14.

On Dolgeville's next possession, Goyette was forced to scramble and ran for a big gain, but John Bellinger popped the ball loose as Goyette went down and Fahy recovered it at the Dolgeville 39.  After a great one-handed catch by Myles Malta that got the Magicians inside the 1-yard line, Crandall ran in for another touchdown to tie the game.

Herkimer had two more great opportunities to score in the fourth quarter.  Its first drive got inside the Dolgeville 25, but two big sacks forced a 4th & 40 and a punt.  The Magicians got the ball back with another fumble recovery by Nick Bronson at the Dolgeville 46, but after driving to the Blue Devils' 32, the drive narrowly ended on Crandall's narrow miss.

The Magicians opened the scoring on their first possession with a 46-yard touchdown run by Bellinger.  Dolgeville responded immediately with a 79-yard touchdown run by Goyette on the Blue Devils' opening drive.  Dolgeville went ahead later in the first quarter on a 55-yard punt return touchdown by Robotham, and Kyle Harlow's 3-yard TD run in the second quarter gave the Blue Devils a 21-7 lead at the half.
