Whitesboro pulls away from Fulton, gets rematch with New Hartford in championship

CHITTENANGO, N.Y. (WKTV) - After the only team to beat it this season won the opening Section III, Class A semifinal Friday night at Chittenango, Whitesboro set up a rematch in the nightcap, knocking off Fulton 35-20 to get another shot at New Hartford in the title game.

Whitesboro, the No. 3 seed and ranked No. 17 in the state in Class A, will face the top-seeded, No. 4 ranked and defending champion Spartans Friday at the Carrier Dome at 5:00.  New Hartford beat Whitesboro 42-28 in the final week of the regular season.

This will be the fourth time the teams have played for a sectional title but the first since 1993.  New Hartford won that game 13-7 to avenge a 23-0 Whitesboro win the year before, and New Hartford also beat the Warriors in the 1989 championship 19-6.

After playing to a 14-14 halftime score, Whitesboro turned the game around in the third quarter.  After having a touchdown pass negated by a holding call then turning the ball over on downs at the Fulton 15-yard line, the Warriors recovered a Red Raiders fumble at the 15 and capitalized with a touchdown pass from Sean Jones to Chris Gibbs--their second touchdown connection of the game--to put Whitesboro ahead 21-14.  Fulton, the No. 2 seed and ranked No. 16, then drove it back and had first and 10 at the Whitesboro 11, but another fumble was again recovered by the Warriors.

Whitesboro increased its lead to 28-14 in the fourth quarter with an 82-yard touchdown run by Nick Mauro.  Fulton then closed to within 28-20, but Mauro put the game out of reach with a 55-yard TD run.
