UCC hosts Curling fun all weekend

By By MIKE LEVIN

WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - Curling is the sport that sweeps up the nation every four years, and at the Utica Curling Club, they enjoy the extra spike in popularity that the Winter Olympics brings to their sport.

This weekend the UCC is hosting their annual Cobb Mixed Bonspiel, a tournament that features 24 different teams from all over the northeast.  The event, which features Curling all weekend, parties at the club and member houses, as well as live music, began Thursday and concludes on Sunday.

Among the competitors is Caitlin Maroldo, the skip for a team from Rochester.  Maroldo, a Utica native who graduated from Proctor High, learned the sport at the UCC, and is now a top US National player.  Her rink lost in the finals of the US Olympic Qualifiers to Debbie McCormick's team, currently competing in Vancouver.

While she was glad to be back on her old stomping grounds, she would have loved to be playing for her country right now.  "It's hard to get over at first, but now it's exciting to watch and i'm really pulling for them, I hope they can get a couple more wins. I think it's great for USA Curling."

The Utica Curling Club is running the Olympic tournament all week, and will have an open house on Sunday, February 28th, just in time for the Closing Ceremonies in Vancouver, for anyone who is interested in getting involved in the sport.
