ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Nate Mallinder had two RBI hits in the latter innings as Smith Post defeated New Hartford 5-4 Saturday in Legion baseball action. Both of Mallinder's late hits put Smith on top, with the first being a double in the fourth scoring Tim Abone. Mallinder also made a diving catch in left field to rob Joe Dessens of a hit in the fifth.
New Hartford tied it in the sixth, on a hit by Erik Verbickas that brought Steve Tomaino home. But in the bottom of the inning, Mallinder hit an RBI single scoring Tim Saccento. That ended up being the game winning hit.
New Hartford got on the board first, thanks to a Tomaino RBI single in the second scoring Billy Cougan. Smith tied it in the bottom of the inning, on a bases loaded walk drawn by Josh Jones.
Smith took their first lead of the game in the third, on a two run single by Steve Eychner, which made it 3-1. But New Hartford tied it up in the top of the fourth, first getting an RBI single by Nick Decresci that scored Dessens, then a bases loaded walk by Joe Betar to make it 3-3.
New Hartford was playing without Joe Carcone, who was working with the Houston Astros organization, who took him in this year's MLB Draft.
