Adirondack's Spann wins state title
ALBANY, N.Y. - Derek Spann of Adirondack won the Division II state wrestling title in the 90 pound weight class, after beating Matteo Devincenzo of Port Jefferson by a 9-4 decision Saturday night.
Danny Fox of Dolgeville was the runner up in 106 pounds, as he fell 3-1 to Luis Weiterbach of Hoosick Falls in the finals.
Sixteen grapplers from the Mohawk Valley qualified for the state tournament, with five of them advancing to the semifinals Saturday morning. Fox beat Ryan O'Rourke from Adirondack 4-0 in overtime to make the finals. Matt Fisher of Oneida fell 3-1 to Nick Gallo of Schalmont in the 160 pound semis.
RFA's Antonio DeLuco was the only local to make the semis in Division I, at 126 pounds, where he fell 4-0 to Keanu Thompson of Grand Street Campus in Brooklyn.
