Big second half gets SU by Canisius

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A strong second half propelled the #4/4 Orange (9-0) to an 85-61 victory against Canisius (6-2) on Saturday evening in the Carrier Dome. SU used a 50-point second half, while limiting the Golden Griffins to 29, to secure the triumph.

The Orange extended its home court winning streak to 29 straight games, the longest active Division I span in the nation. SU also stretched its regular-season, non-conference victory stretch to 51.

The victory was the 899th for Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. Only two coaches -- Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight -- accumulated 900 wins in the Division I ranks.

Senior James Southerland led the Orange offense with 21 points, including 16 in the second half, and contributed five rebounds. Senior Brandon Triche notched 19 points, his ninth double-digit point outing of the campaign.

Sophomore Michael Carter-Williams tallied his fifth consecutive game with a double-double, totaling 12 points and 14 assists. He had 13 assists after the intermission.

The two squads were involved in a close struggle throughout the opening period. The lead changed hands three times and neither squad led by more than seven in the first half. With Syracuse ahead by two, the Orange created some space thanks to a three-pointer from Southerland and two free throws by Triche to make it 30-23. Canisius answered with nine straight points, including consecutive three-balls from Isaac Sosa and Jordan Heath. Down 32-31, Syracuse got two free throws from Carter-Williams and a layup by Triche with one second left to enter the intermission ahead, 35-32.

Syracuse came out strong to start the second half, producing a 15-3 run that increased the lead to 50-35. The run included a three-pointer and dunk from Southerland and four points each from C.J. Fair and Triche. Canisius shaved the lead to 12 a couple of times, the last at 69-57 with 4:17 left. SU then scored 11 straight, keyed by another five-point outburst from Southerland.

Syracuse hosts Detroit on Monday night in the Carrier Dome. Tip time is 7:00 p.m.
