Garrett Baker drafted by Angels

WKTV  - Rome Free Academy grad Garrett Baker was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2011 MLB Draft on Tuesday.

Baker just finished his junior year at Liberty University. The big lefty spent the season as a relief pitcher where he earned Big South All-Conference second team honors.

He posted a 6-5 record, three saves and a 2.73 ERA in a team-leading 25 appearances. He struck out 46 and walked eight batters, for a 5.75-to-1 strikeout-to- walk ratio. Of Baker's eight walks, five of the free passes were intentional.  He ranks 18th nationally in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (1.09 walks/nine).

Garrett comes from a long line of baseball players in the Baker family. Older brothers Todd, Jason, Matthew, Steve, and Josh all played baseball for RFA and Smith Post, and all five of them went on to play in college.  Jason and Steve played professionally, each getting as far as the Class AA level.
