HCCC readies for sub-regionals

By MIKE LEVIN

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The HCCC softball team had their sub-regional game with Niagara CC postponed by weather Tuesday, so the Lady Generals did some indoor work in the gym instead.  The game is set for Wednesday, though the field may not be ready, in which case they would either play at the high school field, or in Little Falls.

"Our goal it to take one game at a time one pitch at a time one at bat at a time," says head coach P.J> Anadio.  "We're trying not to look ahead that's the beauty of this group of girls, their professionalism their class has been amazing, these girls know that our next game is against Niagara and that's all there is to it."

HCCC went undefeated in the Mountain Valley Collegiate Conference for the second straight season and earned the top seed in the Region III tournament.  The Lady Generals are also ranked sixth in the nation, leading every team in hitting, with a .415 batting average.

The team also broke several team records, scoring 434 runs, hitting 39 home runs and 88 doubles.  V-V-S grad Steph Siriano set a new individual team record in home runs, with 15.  That's the national high, as are her 77 RBI.

Siriano credits the team's chemistry as a big reason for all the winning.  "We all get along, we have the same mentality and we all want one thing and that's the national championship," she says.

On the mound, Krista Oakes, who will be headed for Cortland next year, has been sensational, throwing three perfect games and three other no hitters.  She leads the nation in strikeouts per innings pitched, with 1.96.  Oakes was named the Conference Player of the year two straight years, and HCCC's female athlete of the year.

But Oakes is quick to point out that her teammates are just as responsible for her success.  "I'm just determined," she says.  "I have my team behind me its not just me I could get my perfect games without them."
