HCCC wins Region 3A title
DRYDEN, N.Y. - The Herkimer Generals were seeded #1 in the Region III finals, and they lived up to their billing, sweeping Corning CC 19-0 and 9-3 on Friday afternoon. The win propels the Generals into the Division III junior college world series to be held in Rochester, MN May 17-20.
Game One was all Herkimer as the Green & Gold exploded for 19 runs, including Stephanie Siriano's 17th round tripper of the season. Siriano (Sherrill, NY) is the national home run leader for Division III.
Krista Oakes (Hogansburg, NY) and Mollee Putnam (Gloversville, NY) shared the pitching duties in Game One.
Game Two was much closer for a while. The Generals owned a 5-0 lead in the top of the third, but Corning closed the gap to 5-3 in the sixth. Oakes was again in the circle for HCCC. She rose to the occasion and the Herkimer bats came to life in the seventh, scoring four more runs. That made it 9-3. Oakes and the defense kept it that way through the Corning half of the inning, sealing the win and the Region 3A championship.
Oakes and two teammates - left fielder Jessica Dutka (Highland, NY), and shortstop Andrea Rogers (Munnsville, NY) - were named to the All-Tournament team, and Rogers was named tournament MVP.
