HOLLAND PATENT, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Holland Patent field hockey team gained a measure of revenge Monday, beating Mt. Markham 2-0 in front of an ethusiastic home crowd. It was a big win for the Lady Golden Knights, whose 2009 season ended at the hand of the Lady Mustangs, in the Section III Class C semifinals.
Although there was no scoring in the first half, HP had several chances, but couldn't the ball past Mt. Markham's Katie Collins.
About a third of the way into the second, however, the Lady Golden Knights broke through, when Sarah Johnson scored. Johnson has been the catalyst of the HP offense, as she scored a hat trick in the team's victory the previous week against rival Clinton.
The game nearly turned, however, after a red card forced Holland Patent to play one down and gave the Lady Mustangs a penalty shot. But Courtney Bastian's shot was deflected by keeper Allison Friermuth, a sophomore with a bright future in the HP net.
Mellissa Quintanilla added an insurance goal with less than a minute to go, sealing the win for HP (3-0). Mt. Markham fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss.
