Herkimer wins region title, heading for nationals


LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. - The Herkimer baseball team is heading for the NJCAA Division III Tournament after winning the Region III title Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park.  The Generals beat Erie 11-3 in their first game of the day, in the semifinal round, then knocked off Onondaga 9-3 in the Championship under the lights.

In the afternoon game, Herkimer mercy ruled their second straight opponent, finishing in just seven innings.  John Boland hit a home run, while Robert Hardy pitched six of seven innings to earn the win.

In the championship against OCC, Tyler Phillips, Shinnosuke Takahashi and Eric Downey all hit home runs, while Ben Moxley picked up the victory, pitching seven innings, striking out five batters.

The NJCAA DIII tournament begins Saturday, May 24 in Tyler, Texas.
