Ilion holds off Utica for win

By Sports WKTV

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Utica Post has played great for most of the Legion Baseball season, but just doesn't seem to have an answer for Ilion, falling to them for the third time this season, 6-5 Thursday night in the District V winners bracket.

Ilion came out strong from the start, scoring a run in the first, on a Jamie Barr RBI triple scoring Dylan Todd, then three more in the third, on a home run by Dillion Hassett.

Utica had just one hit over the first four innings, before the broke out in the fifth.  After Mike King and Ryan Donovan delivered hits, Vin Gaetano came up with one out.  Gaetano, who hit a pair of two run homers the night before against Little Falls, delivered again, smacking a two run double to the left field corner.  Gaetano then scored on a grounder hit by Mike Obernesser to pull Utica within one, 4-3, at the end of the inning.

Ilion advances to meet Whitestown Friday night at 7 p.m., while Utica falls into the losers bracket, where they will meet New Hartford at 3 p.m.
