NYS American Legion Baseball tournament slides into Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The summer baseball season is reaching its pinnacle with the New York State American Legion Baseball Tournament getting underway, Wednesday.
The tournament will run through the weekend with the championship game taking place on Sunday.
The eight team tournament contains two local teams, New Hartford Post 1376 and Smith Post 24.
Legion baseball honors those who serve through America's pastime, and Utica has been selected as the host city for the state tournament through 2020.
"There's several factors there and its a nice stadium, it's easy to crowd control and again the fan base, the Utica area people really support this and it's great, and we're hoping to build on that," said Dept. Of New York American Legion Baseball Chairman, Bruce Mayfield.
"Whether you come in last place here or first place here or wherever it is, it's just different," said Tournament Director, Mike Macchione. "Getting to wear an American Legion uniform is a unique thing because of who it represents."

In addition to the on-field activities that this tournament offers, the players also had the chance to get to know local veterans to say their thanks for allowing this all to be possible.
