Oriskany advances to state final four

ORISKANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Oriskany baseball team advanced to their first state final four since 2007 thanks to a 7-4 win Tuesday over #1 ranked Hancock in the Class D regionals at Broome Community College.

Austin Smith, who pitched a complete game with twelve strikeouts Saturday in the Section Final against Brookfield, pitched over five inning in relief, striking out seven, while also collecting three hits, driving in a run and scoring one more.

Smith entered the game in the bottom of the first, after starting pitcher Anthony Pickard surrendered four runs on just one hit.  Smith's RBI came in the third, getting the Redskins on the board.

Oriskany took the lead in the fifth, when they sent ten batters to the plate, scoring five runs on just four hits.  Cody Murphy put the Redskins on top with a two run single scoring both Smith and Noah Lupini.  Alex Liddy then drove in Dan Buehler on an infield single to make it a two run lead.  Two batters later Pat Manna drew a bases loaded walk, bringing Murphy to the plate.

After their big first inning, the Wildcats managed just three hits from the second inning on, against both Smith and Lupini.

Oriskany (18-5) now advances to the state semifinals, which will also be held at Broome CC, Saturday at 1 p.m.  If they win, the Redskins would play in the Class D championship at 4.
