SU ends skid on senior night

SYRACUSE – Recording double-digit scoring in their final regular season home game of the season, seniors James Southerland and Brandon Triche lifted #17/16 Syracuse (23-7, 11-6) to a 78-57 victory against DePaul (11-19, 2-15) on senior night in the Carrier Dome Wednesday evening.

Southerland led the Orange with his first career double-double, tallying 22 points and setting a personal best, grabbing 10 rebounds. Triche tallied 15 points, five rebounds and four assits. Junior C.J. Fair totaled 16 points, while sophomore Michael Carter-Williams posted 10, dishing out five assists. Sophomore Rakeem Chirstmas matched a career-high mark with five blocks.

Despite pulling ahead with an early 9-6 lead, Syracuse struggled to maintain the advantage as DePaul responded with three consecutive three balls to capture its first six-point advantage at 17-11.

Trailing by as much as six points again at 21-15 with 10:41 remaining in the opening frame, sophomore Michael Carter-Williams trimmed the advantage back to two points at 22-20 with a three-point play.

Chasing another two-point deficit at 24-22, the Orange responded with a 15-0 run to take the lead for good. SU entered the intermission with a nine-point advantage at 35-26 after the scoring streak, highlighted by a slam from Fair and back-to-back three-point plays from Southerland and Triche.

Breaking the game open in the second half, Syracuse secured its first double-digit lead at 39-29, before stretching the advantage to 14 points at 43-29 with 14:03 remaining in the frame. Triche led the Orange with four straight points during an 8-0 spurt that spanned 3:26.

The Orange lead never dipped below 10 points in the second half, while the advantage increased to as much as 24 points at 73-49 with less than three minutes remaining in the game.

SU held a 22-15 edge on the offensive boards against the Blue Demons, while forcing 18 turnovers for 17 Orange points off miscues.

The Orange is back in action this weekend, traveling to Georgetown to take for a rematch with the Hoyas on Saturday, March 9. Tip time is slated for noon.
