Spartans aim for playoffs

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New Hartford boys lacrosse team played their first game at the friendly confines of Don Edick Field Monday.  Although they fell 8-6 to Cortland, New Hartford led until late in the fourth quarter and made it interesting until the end of the game.

The Spartans missed the playoffs last year for the first time in awhile and they're not happy about that.  For a team that's five years removed from a section title, they want more than just to win a few games.

"We're going to go more than .500," says senior defender Tyler Kallasy.  "We can accomplish that by our mindset.  We're working really hard as a team, we're getting a brotherhood going."

"Last year was rough," adds senior attacker Kevin Chapman.  "It was difficult, to lose every game, I was definitely thinking about it the whole year, waiting for this season to start.  Now that it does, we were talking about it months before, can't wait until the season.  It's different, we're enjoying practice, we're all looking forward to it."

Head coach Dan Pope is in his 19th season at the helm and said " I think what we're trying to do is get back to a little attitude, doing the little things right.  I think we got away from that when we had some of the success and it became more about winning than doing the little things, getting things straight, setting  up right, taking stuff down, getting here on time, practicing hard."

After dropping their first two games, the Spartans will head to ES-M Thursday.
