Tiger returning to NB3 in August

By MIKE LEVIN

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's golf season and that means it's time to turn our attention to the annual NB3 Challenge, entering its fifth year.  Monday it was announced that the tournament will take place on Wednesday, August 29 at the Atunyote and feature twelve world class golfers from the PGA and LPGA.

The headliner is once again Tiger Woods, who returns to the event at the request of his good friend, Notay Begay III, the host of NB3.  The biggest name in golf is coming back as a way to help combat obesity and diabetes.

"Tiger's a big advocate," said Begay on Monday.  "His dad when he was in his later years contracted diabetes.  So Tiger understands what it can do to an individual's health and how it can adversely affect their lifestyle.  Him being here, not only as a friend, but in support of type two diabetes prevention says a lot about what our foundation is trying to accomplish."

The NB3 always gets big stars like Tiger, Rickie Fowler and two-time defending champion Christie Kerr, who are all back from last year.  But it's raising awareness of obesity and diabetes that's most important and Notah's at the forefront of that cause.

"He's doing this on his own time, his own effort and you can't say enough about a man who can do other things in life, but he chooses to help those who need to be helped," says Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter.  "Notah's just teriffic and the ambassador."

New to this year's field are big names such as K.J. Choi, Y.E. Yang, Se Ri Pak and Yani Tseng.  Rounding out the field are Gary Woodland, Charlie Wi, Danny Lee and Lexi Thompson.

"These players get hundreds of offers a year for a lot of money and they're coming here because they believe in what we're doing," Begay said.  They love the facilities and what better place to be at the end of August than Upstate, Central NY.

While the pairings have yet to be announced, there are a lot of interesting possibilities in the East meets West format, where players of Asian descent will be on the East team and players of American descent will be on the West team.

So, for instance, you may see a little friendly rivalry between Yang and Woods, who battled for the 2009 PGA Championship, won by Yang.
