UC & Shawn Grady Memorial Fund join forces

By WKTV

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Utica College Women's Hockey team is teaming up with the Shawn Grady Memorial Fund to sponsor a fundraiser game in support of the fight against childhood cancer.  The inaugural "Gold Ribbon Game" will take place on Tuesday night, February 12th, at The Utica Memorial Auditorium as the Pioneers face-off against SUNY Cortland, with the puck scheduled to drop at 7pm.

The Pioneers will be wearing collector's edition white and gold jerseys during the game, which are currently being auctioned off on the Utica College Women's Hockey page at the UC athletics website (www.ucpioneers.com).

The Shawn Grady Memorial Fund, a non-profit organization which helps local families with children that suffer from life-threatening illnesses, was established by the Grady family of Clinton and is dedicated to the memory of their eldest son, Shawn Grady, who was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of his sophomore year in High School.  After a courageous two year battle with the disease, Shawn died of cancer complications at the age of 16 in the fall of 1991.  During his long illness, the local community pitched in to help the Grady family defray the tremendously high medical costs.  As a fitting memorial to their son, the Grady's established the Fund as their way of giving something back to the community that offered so much support in their time of need.

All proceeds from the commemorative jersey auction, 50/50 raffle sales, t-shirt sales, and all general donations will be presented during a pre-game ceremony to 8 year old Alex McLaughlin and his family of Barneveld.  Alex was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in August of 2011 and will undergo chemotherapy treatments through 2014 to fight the disease.  Alex's parents, Jim and Bonnie McLaughlin, and his 6 year old sister, Terra, will accompany him on ice before the game for a ceremonial puck drop and presentation.
