UC Hockey finishes undefeated in Europe

KAUFBEUREN, GERMANY -  Sophomore forward Steve Charest scored with 15 seconds left in regulation to lift the Utica College men's hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory against ESV Kaufbeuren Saturday afternoon in Kaufbeuren, Germany. The Pioneers wrapped up their European trip with an unblemished 4-0 record, which included three one goal victories.

Charest, senior captain Tim Coffman and junior forward Evan Chlanda all played a part in the two Pioneers goals. Sophomore goalie Nick Therrien stopped 10 shots and did not allow a goal, while classmate Evan Smith came on midway through the second period and made 19 saves, including 11 in the third period.

Chlanda put the Pioneers on top early when he tipped in his second goal of the week. Coffman put the initial shot in front after Charest won the draw in the Pioneers zone.

Both teams played to a stalemate in the second period with Kaufberen outshooting the Pioneers 11-5 in the 20 minute stretch. UC was able to kill off two key power-plays to preserve the one goal advantage headed into the final period.

Kaufbeuren controlled the majority of play in the third period and finally knotted the game up at 1-1 after a misplayed puck in front of the net resulted in an open look for Daniel Menge. Menge capitalized and lifted the puck past UC goalie Evan Smith with just over six minutes to go in regulation.

Charest's game-winner with 15 seconds to go was set up by Coffman and Chlanda.

The Pioneers won all four of their games in Europe this time around and they are now 7-1 all-time in international play after going 3-1 on a tour through France four years ago.
