UC Hockey getting 2010-11 team together

By By MIKE LEVIN

WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - At the CNY Hockey Stars camp this week, UC Men's Hockey coach Gary Heenan talked about his Pioneers, and what to expect in the upcoming season.

The team has fallen on some hard times, finishing below .500 and losing to Neumann in the first round of the ECAC West Tournament each of the last two years.

On the plus side, the Pioneers will have Tim Coffman back, who led the team with 19 goals and 16 assists.  Also are Eric Peterson (15 pts), Evan Chlanda (14 pts), New Hartford grad Scott Wentworth (12 assists) and Robert Etts (11 assists).

But experience will be a problem for UC, as they have four possible goalies, Pat Dunn, Kyle Guestin, Nick Therrien and Evan Smith, who had a combined five starts a year ago.

The Pioneers have a slew of freshman recruits who have a chance to make the team, including Clinton's Jordan Hobaica, who has spent the last two years in prep school.

"We've got about 15 guys coming into the team and it's a matter of getting those guys set logistically with housing and making sure they're on meal plans and scheduled for classes. So, we're real excited to bring that group in and the guys will make their way back about August 15th or so. They're all working hard in the weight room and on the track so we're pumped up, we'll be ready to go," says Heenan.

The Pioneers will open the season on Friday night October 22 at the Aud, when they face Brockport.
