UC downs Neumann, sits atop ECAC West

ASHTON, Pa - The nationally-ranked No. 7/9 Utica College men's hockey team pulled away by scoring three third period goals on its way to a convincing 6-2 victory over host Neumann University in ECAC Men's West Conference play on Saturday night. The Pioneers improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the ECAC after the weekend sweep of Manhattanville (Friday night) and the Knights (1-3-1, 1-3-1 ECAC West). UC now sits atop the conference standings with eight points.

Utica's Trever Hertz (Jaffray, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires (BCHL)) and Adam Graff (Bear, DE/Syracuse Stars (EJHL)) each netted one goal and added one assist, while freshman Luc Boby (Chicago, IL/Kalamazoo (NAHL)), sophomore Nick Miglio (Boerne, TX/Bismarck (NAHL)), junior Louie Educate (Chicago, IL/Aberdeen (NAHL)) and senior Jon Gaffney (Dover, NJ/Springfield Blues (NAHL)) each added a goal of their own.

The goals came early and often as the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first 7:07 of the contest after goals from Hertz and Educate.

Boby padded the Pioneer lead with his first collegiate goal at the 7:41 ledger of the second period and Utica held a 3-1 advantage headed into the third period of play.

Graff scored the first goal of the third period and the Pioneers led by three goals, before the host Knights answered on a power-play with a goal from Sam House to threaten a third period come back.

The Pioneers dashed any comeback hopes by scoring the final two goals of the contest, from the sticks of Miglio and Gaffney, to propel the visitors to the two goal victory.

Utica goalie Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) stopped 24 shots in the victory.

UC's Donny Olivieri (Philadelphia, PA/Bismarck (NAHL)) was credited with two helpers, while Kevin Kirisits (Buffalo, NY/Brockville (CCHL)), Rob Morton (New Hartford, NY/Merrimack (Hockey East)), Ridge Garbutt (Toronto, Ontario/Brewster Academy (NH)), Mike Baird (Oakville, Ontario/Huntsville (OJHL)) and Peter LaFosse (Merrimack, NH/Kimball Union Academy) all tallied an assist for UC.

The Pioneers will complete their four game road trip next weekend when they travel to nationally-ranked Hobart College to take on the Statesmen Friday and Saturday. The last time these two teams met the Statesmen topped the Pioneers at the Aud, 3-2, scoring the game-winner with just one second left on the game clock.
