Whitestown scores early & often to beat MMO

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Whitestown Post had an incredible third inning Thursday, scoring eight runs in their District V Legion Baseball tournament game against Moran-Meeker-O'Rourke, and winning 17-3 in a mercy rule shortened seven innings.  Whitestown also scored three runs in the first, one in the second and four more in the fourth.

The big third inning explosion began with a walk issued by pitche D.J. Forbragd to Matt Cornmire.  It didn't look like the start of a huge rally, however, as Cornmire was caught stealing while trying to make it to third on a passed ball.  The next batter was Dan Smith, who singled his way on, then scored on an RBI double by Matt Engler, on a shot to the gap in right-center field.

Dylan Gorski then singled his way on, and Engler scored on a throwing error, making it a 6-2 Whitestown lead.  With two outs in the inning, Mike Sullivan came up and nearly took the Forbragd pitch out of DeLutis Field, missing a home run by mere inches.  It ended up being an RBI triple, spelling the end of Forbragd's day on the mound.

Riley Dixon came on in relief and fared no better.  He hit Mike Bunal, then gave up a two run triple to Brendan Heitz, on a shot that went over the center fielder's head.  Ryan Watson came up next and hit an RBI double scoring Bunal, to make it a 10-2 lead.

The final two runs of the inning were both scored on mistakes, as Heitz scored on a throwing error at third, hit by Cornmire in his second at bat of the inning.  The second came while Dan Smith was at bat, as Watson scored on a wild pitch.

Whitestown advances in the winner's bracket to face Ilion at 7 p.m. on Friday night, while MMO will now face Smith at 10 a.m. in the loser's bracket.
